Snacks

I have a propensity to eat little and often, sometimes a little larger, but always often :-). Cakes and biscuits were never part of my diet so finding snacks that don’t have sugar was not really a huge task although I had to be mindful of agave, which has fructose and is the “go to” healthy alternative of many snack makers!

Fruit
If I am not including my fruit allowance in one of my meals then I shall sometimes have them as a snack, with or without nut butter or coconut yogurt. Be careful to check the fruit content of other snacks if you have already had your fruit allowance – go for something like popcorn or dried meat.

Popcorn
Graze salted or black pepper popcorn.  The portion is small and so the calories are around 127.
Butterkist salted microwave popcorn.  I usually share a portion with others so I only allow myself half which is about 35g which equates to 158 calories.

Protein
I love biltong and dried wors both of which are South African dried meat products. You can buy them in the UK but it is expensive so this is a rare treat. It is high in calories so only a little at a time and study the ingredients carefully to ensure that there is no added sugar. I buy mine from Amazon. It has Malt Barely extract which is fine.

Jerky is full of sugar so I avoid it. Sorry to any of my American followers.

Nuts
Another passion of mine is nuts but I have to be very disciplined as I have a tendency to eat far, far too many.  Especially if they are dry roasted and covered in salt so these days I keep raw, unsalted nuts around instead. Graze do lovely small portions which means you can control your calorie intake, however, they can be expensive.

Protein Balls
Protein balls are great for a quick fix of energy. My favourites are the peanut butter one from The Protein Ball company and the almond one from Bounce, both of which are made from rice syrup and not agave. Both are available from Amazon.  Bounce is quite high in calories, over 200, so if you are watching these then go for the little balls.  A full pack is under 200 calories and if you only have 1 or 2 of the balls you can reduce it even further.

Sweet Treat
I enjoy cooking and sometimes have left overs from dinner parties. Cheesecake that does not contain cheese and no sugar biscuits like these Aztec ones from Sarah Wilson.  I did a post on “Sweet Delights” that has links to a few recipes. I also enjoy a few nuts sprinkled over plain, unsweetened yogurt drizzled with rice syrup or sprinkled with a small amount of Stevia.

For a low calorie, high flavour dinner try combining all those lovely veggies like courgette, aubergine, spinach, cauliflower and peppers with some lightly fried onions, a tin of tomatoes and curry powder. YUM!
